Yunus (AS)
When you feel trapped

Yunus (AS)

From the whale's belly, he prayed 'Dhulumat fawqa dhulumat' (darkness atop darkness). Reminding us that one sincere dua can lift the veil of darkness no matter how deep it is.

There are moments in life when the walls feel like they are closing in when anxiety, regret, or loneliness feels like a weight you cannot lift. In those moments, remember the man who was swallowed by the sea, and then by a whale, buried in the deepest darkness imaginable.

The Departure

Prophet Yunus (AS) was sent to the people of Nineveh to guide them to the truth. For years, he preached, but they mocked and rejected him. Frustrated and disheartened, he made a hasty decision: he left his mission without Allah’s explicit command, embarking on a ship to sail far away.

The Storm and the Whale

At sea, a violent storm erupted. The crew, believing someone on board had brought bad luck, cast lots to decide who should be thrown overboard. Yunus’s name was drawn three times. Recognizing this was from Allah, he stepped into the churning waves.

But the ocean did not drown him. Instead, Allah commanded a massive whale to swallow him whole not to devour him, but to imprison him. Yunus found himself trapped in three layers of darkness: the darkness of the night, the darkness of the deep ocean, and the darkness of the whale’s belly.

The Dua in the Darkness

In that suffocating silence, where no human could hear him, Yunus (AS) did not scream for help from people. He turned inward and upward. He called out with a prayer that continues to echo through history:

"La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-zalimin."
(There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.)

He admitted his mistake. He glorified Allah. He surrendered completely.

The Relief

Allah (SWT) heard the whisper from beneath the waves. The whale was commanded to release him, casting him onto the shore. Sick and weak, Yunus was cared for by Allah, who grew a gourd plant to shade and nourish him.

When he returned to his people, he found a miracle: they had all repented and turned to Allah. His mission had succeeded, but only after he had been broken and rebuilt.

The Lesson

If you feel trapped today whether by a sin, a debt, a relationship, or your own mental health know that the One who heard Yunus in the belly of the whale can hear you. No darkness is too deep for His mercy to reach. Call upon Him, admit your need, and trust that the relief is coming.
