Tawbah: The Door of Allah’s Mercy

Learn the meaning of Tawbah (sincere repentance) in Islam. Discover the conditions of Tawbah and how to return to Allah’s mercy through Quran and Hadith.

Tawbah (Repentance) and Returning Sincerely to Allah

Every human being makes mistakes. Islam teaches us that we should never lose hope in the mercy of Allah. Allah has opened the door of Tawbah for His servants. Tawbah means leaving the sin, feeling regret, asking Allah for forgiveness, and sincerely deciding not to return to the sin.

The scholars explain that sincere Tawbah has three basic conditions:

Leave the Sin: A person must stop committing the sin.

Feel Regret: A person should sincerely regret committing the sin.

Make a Firm Decision: A person should sincerely decide not to return to the sin.

Allah Calls Believers to Repent

Al-Quran
“And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, so that you may succeed.”
(Surah An-Nur: 24:31)

Allah calls all believers to return to Him. This shows that every believer needs Tawbah and forgiveness. True success comes from turning back to Allah and correcting our lives.

Al-Quran
“O you who believe, turn to Allah in sincere repentance.”
(Surah At-Tahrim: 66:8)

Tawbah Nasooh means sincere repentance. It means leaving the sin, feeling genuine regret, asking Allah for forgiveness, and making a firm decision not to return to the sin.

Al - Quran

“And ask your Lord for forgiveness, then turn to Him in repentance.”

(Surah Hud, 11:3)

that this verse commands believers to seek forgiveness for their previous sins, turn to Allah in repentance regarding their future, and continue upon that path. In other words, a believer should seek Allah’s forgiveness for past sins and sincerely turn away from sin and remain steadfast in obedience to Allah.

How the Prophet ﷺ Practiced Tawbah in Islam

Al-Hadith
“By Allah, I seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him more than seventy times a day.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)

This teaches us that we should make Tawbah and Istighfar a regular part of our daily life.

Section Heading (H2): 5. The Prophet ﷺ Encouraged Us to Repent.

Al-Hadith
“O people! Turn to Allah in repentance and ask Him for forgiveness. Indeed, I repent to Allah one hundred times a day.”
(Sahih Muslim)

This teaches us that everyone needs Allah’s forgiveness. We should regularly turn to Allah and ask Him to forgive our sins and mistakes.

Al-Hadith
“Allah is more delighted with the repentance of His servant than one of you would be when he finds his lost camel in a barren desert. The camel had his food and drink with it, and he had lost all hope of finding it. He lay down under a tree, disappointed and helpless. Then suddenly, he found his camel standing beside him, with his food and drink still on it. He became extremely happy. Allah is more delighted with the repentance of His servant than this person is with finding his camel and provisions.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

This beautiful hadith shows the greatness of Allah’s mercy. A person should never think that his sins are too many or that he is too far from Allah.
